I have been thinking this week about the subtle but important difference between renovation and restoration. Naturally this was prompted by our continuing work on our house. This week we began replacing damaged sections of the chair rails in our house. Chair rails are wooden panels along the wall that go from the floor to about 1m high. They were designed to stop you damaging the walls when you put chairs back and haven't been used in houses for a very long time now. If we were only "renovating" the house we would have pulled these out and replastered the wall to look 'new'. However, we have chose to "restore" this original features in the house as we think it is really special to maintain as much of the original character as we can. So what does this have to do with you? January is usually a time when we think about making changes in our lives (birthday's are another common time we tend to do this). When you think about the changes you would like to make in your life consider whether you want a "renovation" or a "restoration" - or perhaps a little bit of both. Do you want to make a major life change (renovation) or perhaps focus on an area that has been a little neglected (restoration)? Do you want to uncover a part of yourself you haven't seen for a while (restoration) or perhaps create a new aspect of your being (renovation)? The difference is subtle but important. Take the time to understand whether you want "renovation" or "restoration" - it will make it much easier to achieve. Have an inspiring week! Linda
