Left or Right?

December 28, 2005

I trust this weeks Inspiration finds you relaxing and
enjoying the festive season!

I had a lovely Christmas Day out of town with my family and
then Geoff and I spent 2 days hiking in preparation for our
trip to Nepal in February - a dream we have shared for a
number of years. As we are very focused on achieving our
goal of traveling to Nepal and being fit enough to do some
serious hiking my coaching brain is also focused a lot on
dreams, aspirations, goals and the journey of achieving
them.

Often when I work with clients on their goals they get
disheartened if the journey they are taking does not look
they way they expected it to. If it is more difficult than
expected, or has some surprises along the way, the
temptation is stop working towards the goal - to allow
yourself to believe you will never make it.

The hike we did after Christmas was a physically
challenging one - however we had a map, a plan, and a
destination in mind for where to camp overnight. On the
first day we discovered that the track was not as well
marked as we expected so we often needed to create our own
path. This made the hike more difficult and longer as we
worked our way through the bush. We saw a Kangaroo and a
large Goanna which were pleasant surprises, we also
encountered large areas full of stinging nettles which
caused our arms and legs to break out in painful welts.
Because we had lost the "correct" path many of the
landmarks in our information did not appear so at times we
were unsure exactly where we were. Finally we reached the
creek that signaled our campsite was nearby and we were
able to take our bearings and find our way to our camping
spot.

This experience is a good example of how many goals are
achieved. Sometimes all the planning in the world does not
mean you will achieve your goal in the way you expected to.
You may take a wrong turn or get sidetracked, you may face
obstacles and challenges you had not expected. As long as
you stay clear on where you are heading you WILL eventually
get there. Don't worry if the path is not as you thought it
would be.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing! We always learn from the
journey involved in achieving a goal. The first time is
usually the most challenging and next time we set out to
achieve the same or similar goal it is much easier. The
same can be said or the second day of hiking. We chose a
new path to return on which followed the river more
closely. The result was a much easier and faster walk back
out and with only a few stinging nettles to content with!

Funnily enough when we reached the point where we had first
lost our path on Day 1 we discovered the "correct" path was
only a couple of meters away! Quite simply if we had turned
right instead of left it would have been a much easier
walk. Life can be much like that ... each time we make a
choice we are choosing a path. The good thing to know is no
matter whether you choose left or right you can still end
up at exactly the same destination.

Have an inspiring week!
