Who wants coffee?
November 15, 2005
"Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand." - Chinese Proverb In the busy lives we lead it is easy to race ahead without getting the involvement of others. Then when we get frazzled and need help we are amazed that those around us don't know what to do ... we get frustrated and so continue to do it all ourselves. This applies equally to work and personal life. We think ..."I have told them how this works ... why can't they do it??" or "I showed her this on the first day ... surely she can't have forgotten!" What we forget is that most people learn best by "doing" in conjunction with information. A simple example of this from my own life is a coffee machine my husband and I were given as a wedding present. My husband was the one who set it up, read the instruction manually and experiments with the settings until he worked out how to make a great cup of coffee with it. My husband has "told" me how it works, he has even "shown" me how to make a cup of coffee but I am yet to actually make a cup of coffee. For me to learn how to make a coffee I either need to: a) read the manual and do all my experimenting (time consuming!) - or - b) have my husband share his knowledge while I am operating the coffee machine so that I am learning by experience. Think of an area of your life where you have been "telling" people how to do something .... find a way this week to get them involved. I am sure you will love the result! Meanwhile I am off to make a cup of Instant Coffee ... Have an inspiring week! Linda
