***********************************************

Last weekend I was supposed to go hiking with a friend and
camp out overnight. It had been planned for months and we
were both looking forward to it. It was planned for this
particular weekend as my husband was going overseas which
meant I had a weekend not dedicated to house renovations
(the first weekend for about 15 weeks!)

Unfortunately my friend was very sick and had to cancel at
the last moment .... I decided to go alone as I knew the
track was well marked and that other people were sure to be
camped overnight too.

So off I set on a fine yet windy day with a 6 hour walk in
front of me to the campsite. The first 3 hours I walked
with a spring in my step as I enjoyed the sweeping coastal
views. After lunch my legs and shoulders began to feel the
weight of my pack and I began to focus more on my
discomfort than on the scenery. My mind began to wander and
every now and then I would find I had wandered down a track
that wasn't really a track at all ... I would return to the
point I had started from and find the "real" track looking
very obvious in front of me ... I would wonder how on earth
I had missed it the first time.
After 5 hours I was feeling tired, sore and a bit
disheartened ... I wondered if I had made a mistake doing
the hike on my own. After 6 hours I came over yet another
hill to see a set of tents nestled in the gully below - I
had finally made it!

As I was on my own I had plenty of time to reflect and
daydream ... not just about how much my legs hurt! At some
point in the evening, as I lay in my tent listening to the
wind howl, I decided my day's experience was a good
parallel to life.

We often set off in life with a destination in mind. Often
we get sidetracked along the way ... if we are lucky we
notice we have wandered off the path and can make our way
back ... if not we may get lost! Even if we stay on the
right path sometimes our journey can seem very difficult at
times and we wonder if we will ever arrive. The important
thing is to keep focussed on where you want to go and put
one foot in front of the other - you will get there! Even
more importantly sharing the journey with other people
makes it much more enjoyable!

Have an inspiring week!
