First Impressions
September 20, 2005
How often have you made your mind up about a person, product, event or place based on a first impression? How often were you right? How often were you wrong? I am a great fan of trusting your instincts but there is another side to this .... Sydney is currently in a drought and has been for sometime. We live with water restrictions in the home and I haven't put an umbrella in my bag for months. Brides sleep easy because there is almost no chance of it raining on their 'big day'. This morning there was glorious sunshine, at lunchtime there was glorious sunshine, at 5pm it was pouring with rain! I watched people in the city scurry from building to building trying to stay dry (nobody else has been carrying an umbrella either). As I stood under a shop eve waiting for my bus the man next to me turned and said (in a strong European accent) "Does the weather always change so quickly here"? I had to chuckle as I explained that in fact it hadn't rained in months so 'no - the weather does not change quickly here at all". It turns out my new friend had only arrived in Sydney today and this unexpected downpour was his first impression of Sydney weather. He is only staying another day so will not have long to form another impression. It made me wonder how many times I have made an assumption based on a first impression and not bothered to double check if I was actually right. Perhaps it pays to be mindful that your first impression is only a snapshot in time. It may accurately reflect reality day in day out or perhaps it reflects an unexpected downpour. Have an inspiring week! Linda
