What's on the List?

September 12, 2005

"The reward of a thing well done is to have done it."
Ralph Waldo Emerson, Essays

Do you keep lists of things you need to do? Lists of things
you want to do?
I do!

Keeping lists can be a great way to help you focus on what
steps you need to take to achieve an outcome. Lists can be
a great way of prioritising and ensuring you don't forget
things.
Do you tackle the "easy" things on your list first? If you
do it means that if things are left undone at the end of
the day they were probably the most important things. So
you write those things on the next list .... but you leave
them until last AGAIN and so again they don't get done. You
let yourself off the hook though because as long as you
write them on a list you know you will do them ... right?
Wrong! Lists are not a guarantee you will actually DO the
things written on them! Lists can make you feel good while
you are actually avoiding doing things written on them ....

I have a whiteboard in my office - on one side I have some
inspirational quotes written and on the other side I have a
list of things I would like to put into action within my
business. Some of these things are simple to do and others
will take months of work. I became aware recently that I
had been ignoring an action on my whiteboard that really
would be straight forward to achieve if I stopped avoiding
it!! I had written on my whiteboard that I wanted to write
1 article every month ... pretty simple huh??? Well, I had
managed to put this off for about 4 months pretending to
myself that the fact it was on my list was a good step in
the right direction. This was absolute rubbish! Having it
on my list was only a way to capture the idea ... a step in
the right direction would be to sit down and write
something.

So this week I finally gave myself a kick in the backside,
wrote my first article, and submitted it to several online
article sites. You can check it out at
http://EzineArticles.com/?id=68821 and even give it a
rating .... and to make sure I keep on top of my intent to
write 1 article a month I will commit to sending them to
you every month :)

If you know you have been avoiding doing something for a
while give yourself a kick in the pants this week and get
it off your "TO DO" list.

Have an inspiring week!
