Make a difference

September 6, 2005

This weeks news has been consumed with images and reports
from New Orleans, USA. I must admit I find it quite hard to
comprehend the enormity of what has occurred and the huge
amount of suffering which is being played out day in and
day out.

I have noticed how easy it is to feel helpless when there
is huge suffering somewhere else in the world - whether it
be caused by famine, political unrest, natural disaster and
so forth. A sense of being connected to humanity yet
disconnected by the geographical distances.

I thought this week I would share 2 website links with you
where by simply having access to the internet you can make
a difference to someone who is suffering. I think I take
for granted the fact that I eat 3 meals a day, have a roof
over my head, and access to technology which connects me to
the rest of the world.

Opportunity International
Can you imagine that a pair of scissors and a stool can
turn an impoverished woman with a dream into a
microentrepreneur with a hair-cutting business? A small
loan from Opportunity International can provide the means
to transform a life completely. You can help! Simply go to
www.opportunity.org, choose the Ebinger Family Challenge,
answer a few questions, and Opportunity International will
receive $10 to help one poor person.
Currently Opportunity is creating over 800,000 new
businesses every year for impoverished entrepreneurs in 3rd
world countries, and that number will continue to grow
exponentially over the next few years. It is the most
amazing charity business model I have ever seen.
Their principle is people living in poverty need a hand up,
not a hand out!

The Hunger Site
http://www.thehungersite.com
Your click on the "Give Free Food" button funds food for
the hungry, paid for by site sponsors whose ads appear
after you click and provided to people in need around the
world through the efforts of Mercy Corps and America's
Second Harvest.
HUNGER: DO YOU KNOW THE FACTS? It is estimated that one
billion people in the world suffer from hunger and
malnutrition. That's roughly 100 times as many as those who
actually die from these causes each year. About 24,000
people die every day from hunger or hunger-related causes.
This is down from 35,000 ten years ago, and 41,000 twenty
years ago. Three-fourths of the deaths are children under
the age of five.

Take 2 minutes right NOW to access these sites - you can
make a difference.

Have an inspiring week!

Linda

PS - thank you to all who shared humorous personal stories
related to my inability to put the milk in the fridge last
week! It is always nice to know you are not alone :) Site Meter
