Who says the best has already happened?
August 1, 2005
This weeks inspiration is again prompted by a major sporting event .... The World Swimming Championships have been on in Montreal and as Australia is passionate about swimming I had the TV this morning to watch the last few events. Australia has done very well at this championship, broke 3 world records, won many medals - but this was not what inspired me ... I was inspired by an observation made by the television commentators - they were discussing Australia's strong history in the Men's 1500m Freestyle. When this event first started in around 1908 the World Record was about 22 minutes. In 1964 the World Record, set by Murray Rose, was 17.01 minutes. The commentators (who were part of that generation of swimmers) said that at that time nobody in swimming thought it would be possible to swim 1500m faster than the time set by Murray Rose. This morning Grant Hackett swam the 4th fastest time ever over 1500m- 14.42.58s - and also became the first swimmer to win the same event four times at the world titles . He remains unbeaten in the event since 1996 and becomes the first man to win the 400m, 800m and 1500m at a world championships. When interviewed after the race Hackett said "I just want to see how fast I can go and I know I am a lot faster than the times I have done, particularly in the 1500 so for me it is all about pursuing that." At any given time people will believe that the best has been achieved. All it takes is one person to think differently and become committed to stretching boundaries, achieving new standards, and refusing to be limited by what has been achieved before. This does not only apply to sport. Next time someone says "you couldn't possibly achieve that" (whatever it is) - make the choice not to be limited by another persons perception of what is possible. "We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing while others judge us by what we have already done" Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Have an inspiring week!
