Who are you the average of?

June 6, 2005

This week I had the privilege of attending a teleseminar
hosted by Jack Canfield, co-author of "Chicken Soup for the
Soul".

This 1 hour call was FULL of inspiration so I may well
share several thoughts from this over coming weeks. This
week I want to share with you a reminder, an inspiration,
the really connects with me.

Jack was discussing how the people we spend time with
influence our potential, our well-being. The messages, the
energy, the vision of these people impacts how we look at
ourselves and the world around us. Jack has a belief that
we become the average of the 5 people we spend the most
time with .....

In this case I would want to be the average of 5 fantastic
people! Wouldn't you?

Jack gave us an exercise - to write down the names of the
people you spend time with often. Then next to each name
put a + or a - sign to indicate if this person adds
energy/value/inspiration to or life or drains it.

This week I am asking you to undertake the same exercise.

Once you have this list what does it tell you? Do you have
more + or - people? What could you do to increase the
number of + on the list? What if you could have ALL +
people on the list .... what impact would that have on your
life?

You choose to spend time with people. You choose to engage.
Choose wisely.

This exercise reminded me of the first time I travelled
overseas. I went on a 4 month backpacking trip on my own. I
can recall being amazed at how quickly I decided whether I
wanted to spend time with people I met along the way. These
decisions were made within moments. Each day was precious
to me and I was clear that I didn't want to spend a day
exploring a new town with someone I didn't feel good with.

This made me wonder why at home, in my "normal" life, did I
spend so much time with people I really didn't want to be
with?? I returned home empowered by my realisation and made
a commitment to share time only with people who added
enjoyment to my life.

It may sound a little harsh and uncaring however I can
assure you that choosing to spend time with the "+" people
in your life is a far more rewarding place to be.

Have an inspiring week!
