Self Awareness > What you focus on expands

Many different people have said the quote “what you focus on expands” in many different ways. For those of you who know about Law of Attraction and the movie The Secret this is reinforced time and time again. But how does it work in your life?

It truly is as simple as it sounds. What you give you time, energy and focus to, will grow in your life. There are no exceptions to this. It doesn’t matter whether you are focusing on negative or positive things. For example if you want to lose weight and you focus on losing the weight or being overweight you will probably stay overweight. However, if you focus on making healthy choices and your goal weight you will more likely attain the body size you want to. It is only a slight difference in the way you think about it but it makes a big difference to the outcome.

The important thing to remember is what you are directing your time, energy and focus to. If you find yourself being very busy but not achieving what you want to, take a good look at what you spend your time and energy on. This is a trap many people fall into. Often clients will tell me about all the things they did during the week but they didn’t do the one or two things that would have moved them forward to where they wanted to go – and this can be for a variety of reasons including fear of success or failure.

When you are focusing on something put a positive spin on it. For example if you are working on building your confidence, don’t focus on the idea that you are not confident. All you will get is more ‘not confident’. Focus on the idea that you are confident or building your confidence, which is what you will get more of. I can’t stress this enough – you always need to put your focus in a positive light. If you are sick focus on recovering rather than being sick, if you want a job focus on finding a job rather than being unemployed, if you want more energy focus on being energetic rather than not being tired.

When you are talking with others let them know your intentions, put it out there for the universe to hear and oblige you with. Another example I saw recently; a friend of mine purchased a business. It was a great business, well run and with further potential. Their first priority (or focus) was to get the business running more efficiently. This is where they directed their time and energy; and the result – it is now running more efficiently so now they can direct their focus onto growing the business.

If you are spending a lot of time talking with friends about being unhappy, unfit, unhealthy etc you are focusing your time and energy on these things. Everything you talk about, the thoughts you have about something and the actions you take contribute to your focus. I invite you this week to look at one aspect of your life that you are not happy with. Notice how much time and energy you put into being unhappy with it and see if you can find a positive, proactive way to redirect your focus. Consider what you really want and focus on that instead.

Remember, “what you focus on expands” whether you focus on negative or positive things. And remember you can control what you put your time and energy into and bring more of what you really want into your life.
